The North Yorkshire coast is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in England, with charming seaside towns and villages dotted along its length. In this blog post, we'll take a look at five must-visit places along the coast: Whitby, Saltburn, Staithes, Robin Hood's Bay, and Runswick Bay.
1. Whitby
Whitby is a charming seaside town that's famous for its historic abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. The town is perched on the cliffs above the River Esk, and has a picturesque harbour that's still used by local fishermen today. There's plenty to do in Whitby! Explore the narrow streets of the old town, climb the 199 steps up to the abbey for amazing views & tuck into some delicious seafood that's locally sourced.
2. Saltburn
Saltburn is a lovely Victorian seaside town that's home to one of the the most beautiful beaches on the North Yorkshire coast. This coastal gem is famous for its cliff tramway, which is one of the world's oldest water-powered funiculars. Take a stroll along the 150 year old pier to enjoy amazing seaside views or catch some waves at one of Saltburn's excellent surf schools. The town boasts many independent shops & restaurants (The Seaview restaurant has some tremendous seafood!).
3. Staithes
Once a bustling fishing community, this hotspot is now a hub for artists and photographers who can't get enough of its enchanting cobblestone alleys, vibrant homes, and awe-inspiring views of the coastline. And if you're a history buff, you won't want to miss the Captain Cook and Staithes Heritage Centre, where you can learn all about the life of the famous explorer who used to call Staithes home.
4. Robin Hood's Bay
Steeped in history and folklore, with narrow alleyways and hidden corners once used for smuggling contraband goods. The beach is also famous for its fossils, including ammonites and belemnites, which are over 180 million years old. The village is a popular destination for walkers, with the Cleveland Way passing through it.
5. Runswick Bay
This quaint community, which is located in a protected bay, is well-known for its breathtaking scenery, adorable homes, and stunning beach. Visitors can see a variety of marine life, including crabs, starfish, and jellyfish, and the village is a popular place for rock-pooling and fossil-hunting.
